At the intersection of many often-contradictory trains of thought, and disturbed by the accelerated pace of change in modern society, the urban environment is evolving along lines that are increasingly difficult to grasp. In this context, the status of spatiality – from neglected leftover space to tightly controlled “junkspace” – raises many questions. Confronted by such zones of ambiguity, and beyond the degrading or liberating connotations one may give them, we think it is important to capture their conceptual and experiential dimensions in order to inform a proactive practice. It is in this perspective that SYN- approaches urban exploration as an occasion for intervention and research.

SYN- is a Montreal-based urban exploration atelier comprised of architecturally trained artists Jean-Maxime Dufresne, Luc Lévesque and Jean-François Prost. Since its inception in 2000, SYN- has developed a wide range of urban interventions and public workshops, that include hypothetically mooring picnic tables on a constellation of residual, underused or trivialized sites, exploring Montreal’s 30-kilometer long indoor and underground city as a single hyper-building, enquiring into design considerations related to winter microclimates, or testing out possibilities for urban insertions and social catalysis with mobile ping-pong and fussball tables or repurposed furniture. SYN-‘s work has been featured in Canada  (Axenéo7, Canadian Centre for Architecture, Biennale de Montréal, Centre de l’image contemporaine Vox) and abroad (Actions: What You Can Do With the City, CCA / Graham Foundation, Chicago, Illinois ; 1st International Architecture Biennal Rotterdam, Netherlands ; Interstices urbains temporaires, RDS, ISCRA Rhône in collaboration with atelier d’architecture autogérée, Paris, France). SYN- is currently preparing new work for Dakar, Senegal, in collaboration with the IAGU (Institut africain de gestion urbaine).
